Introduction to the Planets

The planets perform important roles in astrology which vary depending on the sign the planet operates through, as well as the house the planet resides in. Each planet and the two luminaries of the solar system, the sun and moon, exert their influence in one of the twelve houses of the horoscope. There can be more than one planet in a house or a house may even be empty, except for the sign of the house cusp.

Planets have more or less synergy with certain houses and zodiac signs, than others. Each planet can be in domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall depending on what sign they are in. There are also houses that are more beneficial to some planets and luminaries that others.

However, as ever, a chart is read as a whole. One less advantageous placement does not  tell us the whole story .

Aspects made between planets reveals the important energies at the heart of your personality and the areas of life most affected by this energy. The work of the psychological astrologer is to find those important patterns and influences.

The personal planets are Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn.

Uranus, Pluto and Neptune are important both on a personal level and also on a generational level, bringing up cultural themes and issues.

In general the malefics, or "tough" action planets (Sun, Mars, Saturn) work well in tougher houses that have greater synergy with these planets. The benefics (Moon, Venus, Jupiter) will tend to have positive results in more harmonious, benefic houses. There are some houses that tend to benefit all the planets reasonably well. When a planet has synergy with a sign and house, there can be expected to be positive results, otherwise known as good dignity.
